The Powder Metallurgy Research Institute of Central South University is a national-level new material research and high-level talent training base that integrates teaching, scientific research, and achievement transformation.
The institute has established a national first-class discipline in Materials Science and Engineering, doctoral and master's programs in first-level disciplines, and a postdoctoral research mobile station. There are 15 research institutes (teaching departments) and experimental centers, with more than 230 teaching staff, including 1 academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering and more than 20 national-level talents.
The institute actively meets the needs of nation, and has made breakthroughs in a series of core key technology for Chinese strategic emerging industries and independent innovation in the field of materials. A systematic material research system has been established, including integrated material calculation, refractory metals and hard alloys, friction and wear reducing materials, powder high-temperature alloys, special ceramic materials, lightweight alloy materials, and carbon based composite materials etc., from basic theoretical research, basic applied research, engineering research to performance testing and evaluation in materials. The studied materials and systems are widely used in industrial sectors and related national economic construction departments. We have completed over 500 national research projects and won nearly 100 provincial and ministerial science or technology awards or above, including 2 first prizes of national Technological Invention, 3 first prizes of national Scientific and Technological progress, 2 second prizes of national Teaching Achievement, and more than 10 second prizes for national Technological Invention (Scientific and Technological progress). We have over 1000 invention patents.
The institute actively promoted the coordinated development of industry, academia and research, regarding the National Engineering Research Center of Powder Metallurgy as an "incubator" for high-tech industries transformation, and established a number of academic companies, including two listed companies - Hunan Boyun New Materials and Hunan Jinbo Technology Co., Ltd.
The institute is the Chairman of the Chinese Materials Research Society, Vice Chairman of the Nonferrous Metals Society of China, and Chairman’s unit of the Chinese Powder Metallurgy Federation (Unofficial). With a growing influence in the international materials field, we have established in-depth academic exchanges and cooperation relationships with universities and research institutions in countries, such as the United States, Russia, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Japan, and Australia etc..
