Nobel Laureate Martin Evans appointed an honorary professor at CSU

    On May 6, Martin J. Evans, winner of the 2007 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine and a renowned professor of biomedical sciences from the UK, was appointed an honorary professor at Central South University (CSU). The appointment ceremony was attended by CSU Executive Vice President Chen Xiang, also Dean of the CSU Xiangya School of Medicine and Director of Furong Laboratory; CSU’s Vice President Li Zhihong; and the heads of the Human Resources Division, the Department of Scientific Research, the International Cooperation and Exchange Office, the Third Xiangya Hospital, and the Xiangya School of Medicine.

    Prof. Evans was born in the UK in 1941 and received a Ph.D. in Histology and Embryology from University College London in 1969 before working at University of Cambridge in 1978. In 2004, Prof. Evans was knighted by the British Monarchy for his outstanding contributions to basic medicinal research. In 2007, Prof. Evans, Prof. Mario Capecchi, and Prof. Oliver Smithies shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for their contributions to stem cell research. From 2009 to 2017, Prof. Evans served as the President and Chancellor of Cardiff University, UK.

    Executive Vice President Chen Xiang and Vice President Li Zhihong presented Prof. Evans the appointment certificate of honorary professorship and the emblem of CSU. Executive Vice President Chen said that CSU is very eager for support and assistance from such a world-renowned researcher as Prof. Evans. He looked forward to Prof. Evans’ wisdom for the university’s progress in medical sciences and support for the university in building a world-class medical discipline. Prof. Evans expressed his fondness for Chinese culture and Chinese people and his willingness to contribute his biomedical expertise and advice to CSU in life sciences.

    Prof. Evans was also invited by Furong Laboratory and Xiangya Hospital to attend the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the Department of Dermatology at Xiangya Hospital in Changsha. He attended a seminar with young experts and medical student representatives from Xiangya Hospital.
