The Powder Metallurgy Research Institute of Central South University is a national level research center that integrates education, scientific research, and technology transfer, and is dedicated to advanced materials research and the cultivation of high-caliber talent.
The research institute has established a national first-class discipline in Materials Science and Engineering, along with first-level doctoral and master's programs and postdoctoral research stations. It comprises five research divisions and two research centers, and employs a faculty/staff of over 230 members. As of March 2025, the institute enrolls 1,951 students, including 940 undergraduates, 514 master's students, and 497 doctoral candidates.
The research institute has established a systematic material research system, including integrated materials calculation, refractory metals and hard alloys, friction and wear reducing materials, powder metallurgy superalloys, special ceramics, lightweight alloys, electrical and electronic materials, and carbon based composites. Research spans fundamental materials theory, applied research, engineering research, and materials performance testing and evaluation. The research institute actively promotes coordinated industry-academia-research collaboration, leveraging the National Engineering Research Center of Powder Metallurgy as an innovation incubator to facilitate the commercialization of advanced technologies.
The institute holds leadership roles in prominent academic organizations, including Chair institution of the Chinese Materials Research Society, Vice-chair institution of the Nonferrous Metals Society of China, and Leading institution of the China Powder Metallurgy Federation (under preparation). Internationally, it has established extensive academic collaborations with universities and research institutions in the United States, Russia, the UK, France, Germany, Japan, Australia, and other countries and regions, significantly expanding its global infl...
The institute holds leadership roles in prominent academic organizations, including Chair institution of the Chinese Materials Research Society, Vice-chair institution of the Nonferrous Metals Society of China, and Leading institution of the China Powder Metallurgy Federation (preparation). Internationally, it has forged extensive academic partnerships with universities and research institutions across the United States, Russia, the UK, France, Germany, Japan, Australia, and other regions, significantly expanding its global influence.

On November 4, 2013, General Secretary Xi Jinping visited the institute and highly praised the achievements of the Powder Metallurgy Research Institute, hoping to make new and greater contributions.
